Disodium 7,7'-(carbonyldiimino)bis(4-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulphonate) is a potent antioxidant that prevents the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are involved in cell damage. It binds to arginine and ami-1, two cytosolic proteins that regulate ROS production, causing an increase in the production of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. Disodium 7,7'-(carbonyldiimino)bis(4-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulphonate) also has methyltransferase activity and can reduce lipoperoxides to prevent lipid peroxidation. This compound may be used as an antioxidant or to prevent oxidative damage caused by ROS.
