2,2-Difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetic acid (DFSA) is a hydrogen fluoride analog that can be used for the synthesis of 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetic acid derivatives. It has a high affinity for hydroxyl groups and electron-deficient carbonyls. DFSA also binds to nucleophilic sites on proteins, including amines and thiols, which are important for protein function. The reaction of DFSA with benzaldehyde leads to the formation of β-unsaturated ketones, such as 2-phenylpropionaldehyde. This reaction is catalyzed by palladium complexes in an oxidative addition reaction.
