3,4-Dichloro-phenylalanine (3,4-DCPA) is a macrocyclic inhibitor that binds to the chaperone GroEL and inhibits protein synthesis. It has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. 3,4-Dichloro-phenylalanine also shows potential for use in the treatment of depression, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. This drug is currently being investigated for its role as a potential drug target for cancer treatment. 3,4-Dichloro-phenylalanine binds to human liver cells with a high affinity and has been shown to inhibit the production of glutamate. The kinetic data show that 3,4-Dichloro-phenylalanine is an irreversible inhibitor of protein synthesis with a low energy barrier.
