Daphnilongeranin A is a daphniphyllum alkaloid that is structurally similar to the human antibody. It inhibits inflammatory bowel disease and has antibacterial activity. Daphnilongeranin A binds to the polymorphic region of the protein and blocks the binding site for bacterial antibodies, preventing them from attaching to their target. This may be related to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines in the gut, which could result in decreased bowel inflammation. Daphnilongeranin A also has diagnostic properties and can be used to identify staphylococci strains that are resistant to antibiotics. The daphniphyllum alkaloids have been found in humans, as well as other mammals, suggesting they have a common origin in evolution.
