3,5-Diaminopyridine is a pyridine ring with two amino groups on the same carbon atom. It has been used as an additive in fluorescence measurements and for optimization of fluorescence properties. 3,5-Diaminopyridine can be synthesized from 2-aminopyridine and formaldehyde. This reaction is catalyzed by hydrochloric acid and chlorine gas. 3,5-Diaminopyridine has been used to aminate other molecules. The amination reaction takes place in the presence of a nucleophilic agent such as potassium hydroxide or sodium methoxide. This compound is also used in magnetic resonance spectroscopy as a chemical shift reference because of its high chemical stability and low toxicity.
