It is an orally active, non-selective inhibitor of monoamine reuptake. Alvimopan has been shown to be effective in animal models and in humans as a potentiator of morphine and fentanyl. Alvimopan has been shown to be more efficient than other drugs such as pentazocine or naloxone in preventing POI.
