2,5'-Dibromo-2'-hydroxyacetophenone is an inhibitory agent that can be used to treat Gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to have the ability to prevent bacterial growth by attacking the enzyme system of the cell, including esterases and dithiocarbamates. 2,5'-Dibromo-2'-hydroxyacetophenone also has a sulfur group that can bind to sulfur in proteins and cells, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis. This compound was shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
