It has a hydrophobic structure and is metabolized by reaction with metoprolol to form dihydralazine lactam, which is also a potent vasodilator. Dihydralazine mesylate has been shown in animals to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This drug can also be used as an adjuvant therapy for primary pulmonary hypertension, where it reduces pulmonary vascular resistance and improves perfusion of the lungs. Dihydralazine mesylate does not cause any significant adverse reactions or interactions with other drugs when administered orally.
