Dimethyl (-)-2,3-O-Isopropylidene-L-tartrate (DMT) is a functional molecule that can be used in the treatment of hydrophila. DMT has been shown to have an affinity for aquaculture and so may be used to treat diseases in this environment. It has also been found to inhibit bacterial species such as E. coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The mechanism of inhibition by DMT is not yet fully understood but it is believed to function by binding to the ligand site on the enzyme, blocking access of substrate molecules.
