2,9-Dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline is a photophysical compound that is used in the study of chemical reactions. It has been shown to react with metal cations and luminesce when activated by light. 2,9-Dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline has a unique structure with phenyl substituents on both sides of the benzene ring. The functional theory of this compound is based on its ability to form metal complexes and its ability to be activated thermally or by light. 2,9-Dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline crystallizes in the trigonal system and its crystal x-ray diffraction shows peaks at 3.5°, 14°, and 22°.
