It is also capable of inhibiting bacterial growth by inducing oxidative stress and generating reactive oxygen species. The mechanism of action is thought to involve oxidation reactions with the bacterial cell membrane and DNA. 2,5-Dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone is a rechargeable agent that can be regenerated from its reduced form back to its oxidized form through enzymatic or chemical reduction.
