It also has optical properties that can be altered by substitution of the carbonyl group with an alkynyl group or nitro group. 2,7-Dibromopyrene reacts with electron donors such as alcohols to form alkylthio groups and with electron acceptors such as halogens to form halogenated products. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of an organometallic intermediate.
