Dimethyl Phthalate (DMP) is a high-value solvent that is used in the production of plastics, adhesives, and solvents. It is also used in toxicity studies as a model compound for phthalates. DMP has high water permeability and can be detected in the environment by solid phase microextraction (SPME). This compound has been shown to have physiological effects on animals when administered at high doses. DMP has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase, nitric oxide synthase, and protein kinase C in vitro. It also inhibits DNA polymerase chain reactions and protein synthesis. DMP's matrix effect may be due to its ability to crosslink with proteins or nucleic acids, which may form insoluble complexes with other compounds such as pesticides.
