2,5-Difluorobenzyl bromide is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5B polymerase. 2,5-Difluorobenzyl bromide can be used as an analog for piperidine and is able to bind to HCV RNA with high affinity. This compound has been demonstrated in vitro to inhibit HCV replication by adsorption kinetics and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. In addition, 2,5-difluorobenzyl bromide has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. avium complex (MAC). The mechanism of action of this drug is not fully understood but is thought to involve binding to the active site of the NS5B polymerase enzyme or inhibition of the initiation phase of viral replication.
