It is a white solid that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in tissue culture. 3,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid can be used as a biocide in wastewater treatment because it has a high solubility and low toxicity, and it inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to hydrogen bonding interactions. 3,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid also inhibits the synthesis of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, which is an intermediate in bacterial dioxygenases.
