4,5-Dibromoanthranilic acid (4,5-DA) is a nitro group-containing compound that is photoprotective. 4,5-DA has been shown to be resistant to degradation by nitrite and other oxidizing agents. The synthesis of 4,5-DA can be accomplished by adding anthranilic acid to a solution of sodium nitrite at pH 8 in the presence of potassium carbonate. This reaction produces the desired product in high yield with a good purity. The use of 4,5-DA as an antimicrobial agent has been studied as it inhibits bacterial growth and causes bacterial cell death. It is also used as an antibiotic in the treatment of staphylococcal infections.
