The synthesis of 2,3-dimethoxyphenylacetone requires the reaction of lithium aluminum hydride with acrylonitrile and hydriodic acid. The molecule can be cyclized in two different ways to form either 2,3-dimethoxybenzaldehyde or 3-methoxybenzaldehyde. The structure of 2,3-dimethoxyphenylacetone is similar to that of hydrazoic acid which has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds such as pyrazines.
