The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it has been proposed that 2,5-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol may be an allelopathic compound. This means that it inhibits the growth of plants by releasing substances into the soil that inhibit the growth of other plants nearby. 2,5-Dimethoxybenzyl alcohol has also been shown to reduce blood pressure in rats. This effect is due to its ability to inhibit angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) as well as increase vasodilation through nitric oxide release.
