This compound yields terminal alkynes and polynuclear compounds in reactions with metals. It can also be prepared by cross-coupling reactions of substituted benzoates with aminobenzoates as ligands. 3,5-Dimethylbenzoic acid ethyl ester is used in preparative chemistry to synthesise other organic compounds.
