The sulfonation of 2,6-dimethoxynaphthalene with SO3 leads to the formation of ethyl diazoacetate and subsequent acylation reactions can be used to produce esters. The reaction mechanism for these reactions involves proton transport from the sulfur atom to the oxygen atom on ethyl diazoacetate. Supramolecular chemistry studies have shown that this reaction also takes place at low temperatures without the need for an acid catalyst.
