The reaction system can be carried out in solvents such as diethyl ether or dichloromethane. The product is obtained as a mixture of two stereoisomers (R and S) with the R form being more abundant than the S form due to steric effects.2,5-Dimethylacetophenone has been shown to react with naphthylamine in the presence of a base to give N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)naphthalene-1,4-diamine in good yield.
