It binds to the active site of serine proteases, including trypsin and chymotrypsin. 2-(Dimethylamino)ethanethiol hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit growth of mutant strains in a bioassay. The chemical reacts with trifluoroacetic acid, generating a reactive intermediate that undergoes a nucleophilic attack on the sulfur atom of the cysteine residue at the active site. This reaction mechanism causes irreversible inhibition of serine proteases.
