Descripción

1,1-Dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium Iodide (DMPI) is a cholinergic agonist. It is used to study the effects of nicotine on the heart and brain. DMPI can be used to assess the effects of nicotine on the heart by observing changes in cytosolic Ca2+ levels. This method has shown that nicotine causes a dose-dependent response in cytosolic Ca2+, which may be due to its ability to activate nicotinic receptors. DMPI also has been used as a model system for studying nicotinism, or addiction to tobacco products. The method has shown that nicotine increases the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, which results in an increase in receptor activity and enzyme activities.
