2,7-Difluorothianthrene is a heterocycle that is resistant to sodium sulfide. The compound was synthesized by the reaction of difluoro with thianthrene in the presence of sodium sulfide as a nucleophilic agent and heat. 2,7-Difluorothianthrene can be used in a variety of ways due to its high thermal stability and low viscosity. It can be used as a matrix for MALDI-TOF analysis and as an introducing group for gel permeation chromatography. The compound has been shown to have optical properties which may be useful in preparing dyes or near infrared lasers.
