5,5-Difluoro-1,4-pentanediamine is an unlabeled drug that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of trypanosomes in vivo and in vitro. It is the first compound which has been shown to be active against both strains of the parasite. The mechanism of action of 5,5-difluoro-1,4-pentanediamine is not yet known. It may be due to irreversible inhibition of polyamine biosynthesis or uptake, or it may be due to a biochemical effect on tissues other than the central nervous system. 5,5-Difluoro-1,4-pentanediamine has stereoisomers and tissue distribution studies have been conducted using rat ventral muscles as well as human erythrocyte membranes.
