Tetrafluoroethane, also known as Freon-12, is a chlorofluorocarbon that has been identified as a potent greenhouse gas. Tetrafluoroethane is a byproduct of the industrial production of fluorochemicals, and its disposal in landfill sites has led to soil contamination. 1,2-Dichloro-2-iodo-1,1,2-trifluoroethane (CIF) is a halogenated hydrocarbon that can be synthesized from tetrafluoroethane using an electrochemical process.
