2,5-Difluoro-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid is a hydrogenolysis product of 2,5-difluoroaniline. It is used as the starting material for synthesis of diazotized imidazole. The reaction of 2,5-difluoro-1H-imidazole with sodium azide in water produces an explosive gas consisting of nitrogen and hydrogen. This compound can be also obtained by photochemical decomposition or irradiation of 2,5-difluoroaniline. The carbonyl group has been found to be active in catalytic hydrogenations and cyclizations. Diazotization occurs by adding sodium nitrite to the solution containing the carboxylic acid and ammonium chloride. Carbamate formation takes place when this compound reacts with diborane in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc chloride or boron trichloride
