2,4-Difluorostyrene is an organic compound that is a fluorinated derivative of styrene. It has affinity for the 5-HT2C receptor and can be used as a potential drug candidate for regulating appetite and weight. This compound can be used as a sensor to detect acetaldehyde in blood, which can be useful in detecting alcohol abuse. 2,4-Difluorostyrene also has potential use in the production of polymers and copolymers. The compound can be synthesized by cross-coupling with butyllithium followed by dehydration of the intermediate with fluorine gas or hydrogen fluoride gas. 2,4-Difluorostyrene undergoes copolymerization with styrene at temperatures between -78°C and 100°C to form polystyrene or poly(styrenesulfonic acid).
