1-Ethoxynaphthalene is a hydrocarbon that is used as an intermediate in the production of dyes and pharmaceuticals. It has the chemical formula CH2=C(CH3)COCH3. It belongs to the group of aromatic hydrocarbons and is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. 1-Ethoxynaphthalene can be produced by reacting naphthalene with hydrogen chloride gas in the presence of sodium hydroxide or by chlorination of ethylene oxide. The reaction mechanism for this process includes an initial addition step, followed by ring closure, yielding 1-ethoxy-2-chloronaphthalene. This product has been shown to be toxic to bacteria through its ability to inhibit population growth. 1-Ethoxynaphthalene also reacts with hydroxyl groups on biological molecules to form monocarboxylic acids, which are able to react with chloride ions (Cl-) to form hydrogen chloride (HCl).
