5-Ethyl-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde is an organic compound that has been shown to be a selective inhibitor of papillomavirus DNA polymerase. It binds to the active site of the enzyme, preventing it from synthesizing DNA. The compound also inhibits the replication of other viruses with similar enzyme structures, such as herpesviruses and adenoviruses. 5-Ethyl-2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde is not toxic to cells in culture and has low toxicity in animal models. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells by inhibiting protein synthesis.
