Ethyl (2-formylphenoxy)acetate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H10O3. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and has a strong, fruity odor. It can be prepared by reacting salicylaldehyde with ethyl formate in the presence of acid catalysts or by heating phenol with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. Ethyl (2-formylphenoxy)acetate interacts with amines to form amides and can be used as a reagent for assays, including cell toxicity assays. The functional groups on the molecule are: amine, amide, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl group. The molecule has been shown to have functional groups such as nitro and hydroxylamine and also reactive functional groups such as carboxylic acids. The molecule has been shown to act as a catalyst for reactions that involve trimethyls
