Ethyl (2-formylphenoxy)acetate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H10O3. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and has a strong, fruity odor. It can be prepared by reacting salicylaldehyde with ethyl formate in the presence of acid catalysts or by heating phenol with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. Ethyl (2-formylphenoxy)acetate interacts with amines to form amides and can be used as a reagent for assays, including cell toxicity assays. The functional groups on the molecule are: amine, amide, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl group.
