Ethyl 2-cyano-2-ethylbutanoate is an aralkyl compound that is used as a precursor to other organic compounds. It can be synthesized by reacting phenolphthalein with dicyandiamide and methanol in the presence of acidifying agents. The reaction produces a reactive intermediate, which can be hydrolyzed to produce ethyl 2-cyano-2-ethylbutanoate and hydrochloric acid. This product has been shown to react with barbituric and cyanoacetic acids to form ethyl 2-cyano-2-ethylbutanoate esters. Ethyl 2-cyano-2-ethylbutanoate has also been used in the synthesis of alpha, beta unsaturated amides, which are useful as pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals.
