3-Ethylnorvaline is a biomolecule that belongs to the group of antimicrobial agents. It is a hydrophobic and acidic molecule that inhibits the activity of enzymes such as threonine dehydratase, glutamic racemase, and norvaline epimerase. The 3-ethyl side chain can be used as a molecular probe to detect the presence of branched-chain amino acids in proteins by labeling with fluorescein. This compound also has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as E coli and Salmonella enterica.
