Ethyl 2-aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylate is a chemical that inhibits the methylation of DNA, which is a process that usually occurs during transcription. It has been shown to inhibit the transcription of genes in embryogenic, insensitive and hypomethylated plants. The effects are reversible by methylation inhibitors such as 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine. Ethyl 2-aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylate has also been used to investigate whether it can be used as a developmental or transition agent for plants.
