Ethyl 6-(hydroxymethyl)nicotinate is a crystalline compound that belongs to the group of benzoic acid derivatives. It has been shown to have frameworks with octahedral geometry and a deprotonated carboxylic acid conjugated to a hydroxymethyl group. The molecule can reversibly take up hydrogen gas or protons, depending on the pH level. This property makes it an excellent candidate for adsorption of hydrogen gas from coal-fired power plants and other sources of pollution. Ethyl 6-(hydroxymethyl)nicotinate also has porosity, which makes it useful as a catalyst support in organic synthesis.
