Ethyl 3-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate is a synthetic intermediate that can be used for the production of pheromones. It is produced by the condensation of ethyl acetoacetate with 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst. This reaction yields high yields and also provides an authentic product. Ethyl 3-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate is used as a precursor to dieckmann and danaidone, which are insecticides that have been shown to be effective against various pests such as mosquitoes, bed bugs, and cockroaches.
