It can be used to study membrane structures, as the emission wavelengths of these compounds are shorter than those of other fluorescent compounds. The quantum yield for 1-ethynyl-4-(octyl)benzene is 0.04. 1-Ethynyl-4-(octyl)benzene polymerizes with pyrrole to form polyacetylene, and it is one of the monomers in heterocycles. The 1-ethynyl-4-(octyl)benzene molecule has been shown to have fluorescence properties at room temperature, but at higher temperatures it reacts with oxygen to produce furan emissions.
