Naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids. It is administered by injection and has a short half-life. Naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate binds to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, which prevents binding by other opioids. This results in an increased metabolic rate, which can be used as a marker for effectiveness of treatment. Naloxone hydrochloride dihydrate has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on monoamine neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.
