Ethyl 2-(3-chloro-2-pyridinyl)-5-oxo-3-pyrazolidinecarboxylate is a maleate insecticide. It is synthesized from ethyl 3-[2-(3,4-dichlorophenoxy)pyridin-3-yl]propanoate by diazotization with sodium nitrite and sodium hydroxide followed by treatment with ammonia. This reaction system proceeds through the formation of an enamine intermediate, which reacts with chloride to form the final product. The synthesis of this compound is an example of a synthetic process that requires both nucleophilic and electrophilic reactions.
