Descripción

Ethylene oxide is a gas that is colorless, odorless, and toxic. It is produced in a process known as ethylene chlorohydrin synthesis. This compound has been shown to inhibit enzyme activity by altering the hydrogen bonding between the enzyme's substrate and its active site. Ethylene oxide also has biological properties such as stimulating the release of histamine from mast cells and increasing blood pressure. The hydrophobic effect may be due to water vapor being expelled from the molecule.
