It can be synthesized from ethyl acetoacetate and cyclohexanone with the addition of formaldehyde. Ethyl 2-cyclohexanoneacetate is an example of a heterocycle, which contains two or more fused rings. This compound has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on Corynebacterium glutamicum in culture. The growth rate was found to be decreased by 30%. The inhibition may be due to the formation of an ethyl levulinate intermediate that has a high affinity for the h2 receptor.
