Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a polyvinyl that has minimal toxicity and can be used in pharmaceutical preparations. It is an amphoteric cationic surfactant that offers excellent bioavailability, high biocompatibility, and low toxicity. EDTA has been shown to inhibit the growth of a number of microorganisms by binding to their cell membranes and interfering with their metabolism. This chemical has also been shown to reduce histamine levels in animals and humans. EDTA is used as an ophthalmic drug for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. The molecule also acts as a chelating agent, removing calcium ions from proteins, which may account for its anti-inflammatory properties.
