Ethyl dichloroacetate is a microsphere that is used as a solid catalyst. It is prepared by reacting ethyl formate and methyl sulfone in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The reaction products are water-soluble drugs and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Ethyl dichloroacetate has been shown to be a good catalyst for cationic polymerization with polyvinyl chloride. This chemical has also been shown to increase the viscosity of mixtures with methylene chloride, ethyl ether, and ethanol, as well as being an excellent solvent for cellulose acetate butyrate.
