Ethyl cis-3-bromoacrylate (EBAC) is a nucleoside analogue that can be used to synthesize adenosine and uridine. EBAC is a stereoselective, nucleophilic addition reagent that reacts with electron-deficient alkyl halides. The reaction proceeds through an intermediate, which is the desilylation of the alkyl bromide. This reaction occurs in two steps: first, the nucleophilic attack on the alkyl group by the acrylate group; second, the release of bromide ion from the double bond and subsequent substitution of ethyl group. The mechanism for this reaction is analogous to that of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). EBAC has been shown to have hydrolase activity against various ester substrates and conjugated analogues in vitro.
