Ethyl 3-oxo-4-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)butyrate is an azide intermediate that can be used in the synthesis of a variety of compounds. It is prepared by condensing chloroform with benzene and ethyl triphenyl phosphoranylideneacetate in the presence of a base such as sodium methoxide. This reaction produces ethyl 3-oxo-4-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)butyrate and sodium chloride. The preparation of this compound requires low yields and yields, which makes it difficult to produce. Ethyl 3-oxo-4-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)butyrate is also an analog for Wittig reagent, which has been shown to be useful for carbonyl reactions.
