Descripción

Ergosterol is a sterol that is found in fungi. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes such as the cytochrome P450 system and the fungal-specific enzyme, lanosterol 14α-demethylase. Ergosterol has been shown to inhibit melanogenesis in wild-type strains of yeast and human cells. Ergosterol also binds to DNA, which may be responsible for its cytosolic Ca2+ regulation and nuclear DNA binding activity. This sterol also plays a role in iron homeostasis through its effects on heme synthesis, which is important for cellular respiration. Ergosterol has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory pharmacological activities against Candida glabrata.
