2-Ethoxyethyl cyanoacetate is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is prepared by the esterification of 2-ethoxyethanol and acrylonitrile. It exists in two geometric isomers, cis and trans, which are formed from the reaction with hydrogen bromide. 2-Ethoxyethyl cyanoacetate has been used as a radiation polymerization inhibitor to prevent degradation of polymers exposed to ultraviolet radiation. This chemical reacts with alkynes to form a polymer film that can be developed into a high resolution microfilm using a solvent such as acetone. The addition of additives such as ethers or ketones can also affect the reactivity of this chemical. 2-Ethoxyethyl cyanoacetate reacts with uv irradiation to produce a reactive compound that reacts with amines or alcohols to form stable adducts.
