Ethyl ferrocene is a disulfonate that has been used as a substrate for glucose monitoring. It has been shown to reduce the redox potential of glucose, which can be measured using a voltameter in vitro. The enzyme glucose oxidase reacts with glucose and oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide, which is reduced by ferrocene to form water.
