Ethofenprox is a pyrazole-ring containing insecticide for use in controlling mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and other insects. It has been shown to have synergistic effects with the insecticide permethrin and has a high resistance to detoxification enzymes. Ethofenprox is not toxic to mammals because it does not inhibit mammalian enzymes. The analytical method used for the determination of ethofenprox in water samples is based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of DNA sequences encoding the pesticide. This selective PCR technique allows detection of trace quantities of ethofenprox in water samples and has been used to analyze wastewater treatment plant effluent. Ethofenprox also exhibits acute toxicities against human pathogens such as Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli.
