4,4'-Ethylenedianiline (EDA) is a chiral molecule that can be used as an analytical reagent. It has been shown to be able to react with hydrogen peroxide to produce 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radical. The TEMPO radical then reacts with glucose in the presence of copper ions and gel permeation chromatography to form a blue colored compound. This color change is proportional to the concentration of glucose in the sample. EDA has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.
